SPATHE Maang decorative brush is made from date palm leaf, gathered at the stage of maturity when it is most flexible and holds its shape. The leaf is dried in the sun, then bound with natural fiber and woven and braided by hand into this closed, budlike form. From Shinto shrines to Vedic temples, sweeping has always meant clearing and renewal. Hand-folded from date palm leaves by Maang artists, this brush is a piece of living craft. Display it at home or in the office as a decorative accent for protection and prosperity, then use it as a gentle duster for shelves, frames and delicate surfaces. It can also be hung on curtain rods, furniture knobs etc. to add a natural accent and softness in interior setting.

The Maang community of Pindrai village, in central India, have worked leaf into ropes, brooms and ritual ware for generations. Brush-making comes from that lineage. These pieces are made by Kanta and Kacharu Khadse along with their son Santosh Khadse. Color may change over time becoming lighter. Please allow for some irregularities and small inconsistency in sizes due to the handmade processes and use of natural materials as found in nature.

Story

Maang artisan families in Pindrai village, in the forested hinterlands in Central India, choose date palm leaves at the stage when they are most flexible and strong. The leaves are sun-dried and cured, then damped and folded, rolled and knotted by hand into modular forms, joined with natural fibers.
This is knowledge older than pottery or textiles. Leaf craft is among humanity's earliest material cultures, and the Maang carry it forward as a living practice. For generations, they made brooms, ropes and plates for rituals, weddings and feasts. Their leaf-ware stood for purity in sacred ceremonies, even as the community itself was kept at the edge of the village.
When plastic replaced the leaf broom, Maang women turned the same skills toward new forms. The Maang brush honors that lineage. Display it as a decorative accent, or use it as a gentle duster. Either way, you hold hours of patient, hand-folded work.
The Maang community's journey from humble palm leaf to exquisite art speaks to innovation, cultural endurance, and a sustainable relationship with nature. This is a living tradition, carried forward by artisans whose skill deserves to be seen on its own terms. At Fyoli Fyoli, we're grateful to be part of that continuity.
