Pashmina is the world's most luxurious natural fiber which comes from the high altitude Changthangi goats found in Ladakh, India. It is associated with the nomadic shepherd Changpa people of the Changthang plateau from who the Pashmina fleece is procured.
Some irregularity is characteristic of the handmade process, handloom isn’t just fabric, it is a feeling and a wonderful showcase of human spirit and their connection to the land.
Story
Story
Pashmina goats are located in Changthangi, where the Changpa nomadic people take care of them. The production of Pashmina involves a collaborative process. It entails collecting the undercoat of the goat, which is shed in the spring, through combing rather than shearing. This undercoat, a fine Pashmina, undergoes various processing stages, including cleaning, sorting, and spinning. Our community women, such as Saleema, spin the Pashmina, which comes in natural colors like ivory and grey. Pashmina is then woven on traditional looms by master artisans like Firdose and Hilal.
Zoji La is a high-altitude mountain pass in India, in the Ladakh region (in the Himalayas). It connects the Kashmir Valley to Ladakh, sitting on the route between Srinagar and Leh.
It’s been a key route for trade and movement between Kashmir and Ladakh for centuries, wool and goods have moved through passes like this between the high pastures of Ladakh and the weaving centers of Kashmir.
